Every year Bangladesh faces flood, the natural disaster covered with sea of water. with catastrophic phases. Water flows smashes house, crops, cattle, even lives in this time. Although it makes disastrous environment, but grassroots poor fight with victorious spirit, don’t be disappointed. In a sense they are freedom fighter against flood beyond races, religions and classes. In extreme short of food, crops and safe drinking all share with commitment. Generally people help each other with commitment and go forward with the hope to plant golden crop in fertile soil of the alluvial field. There is a culture to help effected people. During flood NGOs, humanitarian organizations and volunteer groups help and give hope with total devotion. Although there is a question on corruption and misusing of public property, particularly to aid by government and local government representatives. There is a lot of testimony and complains also about using the governmental aid with political considerations.
However peoples regularly receive the monsoon flood, but flash flood, makes tragic and great loss! Generally each year in Bangladesh about 26,000 sq km, 18% of the country is flooded. The main causes of flood are over low from up stream countries and areas, huge rainfall, snow-melt in the Himalayas and glacial displacement, river siltation, human intervention of the environment, construction of barrages along the banks of the river, deforestation and change in river by tectonic anomalies for example earthquake.
Although there is every year flood, but that of 1987, 1988 and 1998 were catastrophic, leading to widespread destruction, misery and loss of life. The severity of the floods of 1987 and 1988 led the government to look for a plan. To reduce losses by floods as well as to use the surplus water for irrigation, the Bangladesh water development board, constructed a number of embankments and barrages and dug canals. |
