Saying of a sex worker
Interview taken by: Shamsul Arefin

To search the life and reality of the sex worker in Bangladesh, Shamsul Arefin has taken an interview with a sex worker.  The audio clip and transcript of that interview as follows:  


Q1: When did you join in this profession?
Sex worker:
one year before.

Q2: Why did you choose this profession?
Sex worker: I came in this profession for poverty, to earn food’s money. My parents’ financial condition is not good. 

Q3: Why you did not take another job?
Sex worker: Though there are many jobs but most of them can not earn basic amount for life sustenance. If I work in any office how much they will pay? Around Tk. 3000? This is not enough for maintain the family.

Q4: Who lives in your home?
Sex worker: I have my parents, my brother and sister in my home.

Q5: Do they know about your profession?
Sex worker: No, they do not know.

Q6: If they know your profession, will you face any problem?
Sex worker: Yes there will be serious problems. My parents may cut off relationship with me.

Q7: Do you face any problem in this profession?
Sex worker: As the country situation now, it is normal to face problem.

Q8: What types of problems do you face?
Sex worker: When police come than they beat us or arrest us!

Q9: Do you face any problem from brokers?
Sex worker: No, they do not create any problem. We do our job and take the money. They do not create any problem regarding money.

Q10: How much  you earn per day ?
Sex worker: Around Tk. 500 to 1000.

Q11: How do you divide the money?
Sex worker: The income does not divide. We get averagely Tk.700-800 for ten transactions.

Q12: If you get any batter option, do you have desire to change this profession?
Sex worker: Yes, of course. I will change this profession. If I change to earn for maintaining the family it is enough. I will change....

Q13: How much money do you earn par month?
Sex worker: I can save at least Tk. 5000 after all my family expenses.

Q14: What do you use for protection from STD?
Sex worker: We use condoms. Some rough client come, but we can not manage, we can not do anything with them.
